Introduction to Early Intervention for Physicians

This module is designed for Physicians working with children aged 0-3 and their families. The following topics will be covered:

  • The purposes of Early Intervention under the Individual with Disabilities Act, Part C (IDEA, Part C)
  • The Mission and Key Principles for Providing Early Intervention
  • The services in Natural Environments referred to families in the program
  • The role of referring families of young children with disabilities or delays
  • Identify ways to effectively support families participating in the early intervention program

Estimated Time to Complete: 1 hour

The module is divided into several 10-15 minute segments. 1 hour Continuing Medical Education Units available.

Credits: The AAFP has reviewed An Introduction to Early Intervention for Physicians and deemed it acceptable for up to 1.00 Enduring Materials, Self-Study AAFP Prescribed credits. Term of Approval is from 02/10/2023 to 02/10/2024. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Many Faces of Autism

An Introduction to Characteristics and Simple Strategies

This introductory module presents information about unique characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including social-communication, restricted interests and patterns of behavior, sensory, cognition and information processing, and emotional regulation. Five simple strategies are introduced that may be used anytime, anywhere with young children, students, and adults with ASD.

Learning Objectives:

  • Provide an understanding of the spectrum of skills that characterize autism spectrum disorder, or ASD.
  • Dispel common misconceptions about ASD.
  • Provide simple strategies that may be helpful for individuals with ASD.

TELE-ASD-PEDS Training

This module provides an overview of the TELE-ASD-PEDS tool which is designed for use by providers and families during a telehealth assessment for autism. The TELE-ASD-PEDS tool allows providers to walk families through tasks with their child while professionals observe the possible presence of autism symptoms. The tool was designed for use with children under 36 months of age who have been referred due to concerns for possible autism spectrum disorder and developed through Vanderbilt Medical Center’s TRIAD program.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Increase awareness of early identification tools for ASD and options for telehealth
  2. Build observational skills in early detection of ASD red flags via telehealth

Estimated Time to Complete: 3 hours

The module is divided into 3 one-hour segments.

Credits: The AAFP has reviewed Tele-ASD-PEDS and deemed it acceptable for up to 3.00 Enduring Materials, Self-Study AAFP Prescribed credits. Term of Approval is from 02/07/2023 to 02/07/2024. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
